Here we go...departure for summer 2016 trip!

We are ready to go!

She was showing signs of attachment to this
baby so we brought her, one of Dev's and I
only brought one other music toy and
a favorite book.

A little tired.  Get ready for a 6 hour
time difference little one.

Good running around time before we get
back on the plane.

This is a Cambria face.

Bringing my pillow for her to lay on was
a great decision!
Whenever we get an extra seat, we are super happy!
We are traveling quite a distance.  I also realize how
far out in the ocean we live...gulp!

"Take Flight"
We were only 30 or so miles from DC and we were
rerouted to Cleveland due to weather.  I looked down
at this sweet one in my lap as may of us were feeling
inconvenienced and frustrated.  She felt neither.  Just rest.
I was reminded of my Bible study, "A Praying Life",
and how we need to lift everything up to the Father.

Yeah, we made it!
After 9 hours of travel!  This was after the Maui flight!
It was a beautiful airport.
And we are off.  I love absolutely love the part
of travel where the open road is before you and
you never know what a day is going to hold.
The day the open road held trying to figure our
the metro system...

....and running through the rain several blocks to
our hotel.  Once inside the hotel feeling like a
drowned rat in a beautiful space.
But smiling anyways...
Because we had showers and room service!

Coming up from the subway with our three kiddos
into the rainy night surrounded by homeless people, I was
not ready for Andrew to whip our map and figure out where to go.
I felt like we were island bumpkins.  We came up from
that subway and we were far from palm trees!
I felt really vulnerable and a sense of culture shock.
But when morning came, it all looked different and
we got on our "city legs!"

We tried shoes...

But she wasn't having it...

the lobby
The first of many shoe pics for Dev.

Exploring the lobby.  We stared a ritual of
getting Starbucks for breakfast each morning,
not a bad morning start.
Our first day remains possibly my favorite.
We awoke at 1:00 in the afternoon.  Our clocks
were majorly off.  We just took to the streets
and Andrew suggested we head to Fords Theatre.
We happened to arrive 10 minutes before
the next tour.  On a trip, it is sometimes fun
to not plan it all out.  After this day, I was
pretty focused on planning and chatting with
Andrew each night about how to maximize
our days.  There is so much to see.  It was fun
on that first day not being in that planning mode
quite yet....
When one lives on as island, a city awakens you!

One of my favorites of the trip...just
a accurate pic of their personalities.

A park ranger storyteller told us the history leading
up to the assignation of President Lincoln
and the fateful night in this theatre.

We then walked across the street to where
he actually died.

The bed where Abraham Lincoln passed away.

All the books written about Abe!

Deveraux read so much in this museum.

So we are walking along and see this Museum and
say, Okay lets go check it out.  One of the cool
things about DC is all the museums are FREE!
This was Dev's favorite.
Bobo's favorite.
They were excited to recognize Rosa Parks.  I love that
being their teacher throughout this trip, I know what
we have studied and talked about during the
school year...very cool!
Ahhhh...I love beautiful buildings!

Bobo wanted an army guy.
For papa

The islands

I had to take a shot of this, it was a series of
portraits of 4 sisters just in their ordinary days
but charted their being together over the years.  I always
want our cousin pictures to chart their growth. I felt very
affirmed my ideas had a similar feel to a photographer
in a National gallery...ha ha.
Then their was this beautiful atrium in
the middle of the gallery.

We met a lovely family giving us several tips for around
the city, they had been to Maui and we had a nice chat.
They even invited us to dinner if we had a free night!

Next stop was to meet up with a past co-worker of Andrew's
who had recently moved from Maui.  The restaurant we wanted
to go to was a long wait (we are not used to those in Maui) and
so based on the suggestion of the family we had just met, we
headed to Music in the park.

On the walk home, we caught a glimpse of the capitol.

Fun sights to see.

Andrew had read about a desert place that we tried out on the walk home.
Now back to the hotel.  We are a bit weary but loved our first
day in the city.  So glad we came!
