Ready to go!
Dada to us to this quirky, edgy, glad my kids are not totally aware
of the world,....donut shop with music so loud and pounding,
ordering was as long as I could stand to be in there.
But...my donut was really good!! Portland Cream,
chocolate filled cream donut! I ate it without much guilt.
Voodoo Donuts!
Pink box of delicious!
Bobo got the world's largest bear claw.
Dev picked one with nerds on top, she said it was amazing!
Bobo actually fell asleep as we drive through the rain trying
to find points of interest that we couldn't get to...so after a couple
of hours we headed to Powell Bookstore, the world's largest independent
book store.
It was amazing. I have never seen a children's section so large and
comprehensive, covering every theme and area. Then if that wasn't
enough. there were used books side by side with new. We spent
almost 3 hours in that bookstore.
It felt a little like a library.
We rose again, hoping the rain would break a bit and we could
see Portland a bit easier. We headed to a tram that is
actually used to connect a hospital. We were given a free
ride from a kind woman.
Portland
Someone did not want to only have just one ride.
Transitions have been hard for Bobo after certain activities,
maybe it is all that we are doing and moving from one
location to the next and maybe some developmental
expression as well. Not fun, but working through it.
Next we embarked on the USS Blueback submarine.
going in....
We all sat around the officers table to get a feel how it
feels to sit with so many at a table.
I found out that it was a privilege to use the
periscopes. Sailors would be invited up to take a look.
Usually only officers were allowed
on deck and so a sailor had very little opportunity
to see the outside world for a usual tour lasting
about 6 months.
The beds, everything they owned was kept
in the small space under their beds. The were
allowed one shower per week for 2 minutes.
Smoking was allowed anywhere on the sub.
And something I did not realize was that all tours of duty
on a submarine were voluntary. And it was
looked upon with pride to complete a submarine tour.
The mess hall. They had a frozen yogurt machine for ice cream
whenever and the food was known for the best in the military
branches. So I guess between ice cream, cigarettes, really
good food, and a potential look through a periscope the men
kept their sanity. Don't sign me up!
We ended the day with dates. Deveraux had chosen her
souvenir and had been waiting for a Claire's to claim it.
So we hit the mall and had a great time!
