Kamp Kumalani

This marked year 3 for us at Kamp Kumulani, the
VBS camp for our church.

A sweet friend...many hands helped with Cambria.
She had been experiencing stranger anxiety for the
last month or two...but for this camp, she got
over it.  It was amazing.  Sometimes I would have
to go looking for her.  It was a good experience
for her and the kids loved her.
Practicing.  My roles this year were delivering
the skit each day to the campers and in
charge of the craft area.  This is the first
year I did not have my own little group.
In some ways I missed that but it was also
good to help facilitate a bigger activity
and the women that helped were great!

There she is!

One day it rained on us, so they had to go
get tents from the church.

It was amazing how smoothly it all worked out.
Cambria would be held by whomever, usually
on camper in particular who loved her and would
come looking for her.  During that time, we would
run through the skit.  Then I would have help
prepping the snack.  I would take Cambria back until
we would perform the skit, as I was always the
narrator.  Then I would feed her while everyone was
still in the big group and she would shorting after
that fall asleep.  Some days she would sleep
for awhile on me.  Then she would stay awake until
we got home.  She was so good and that is how
it worked for me to be able to help out.

This little one would just walk up to me in the morning,
hold out her hands toward Cambria and say, "Come!"
My actors
She wanted to try the ergo.
Someone told me this boy always got into trouble.
He was so sweet on Cambria.  My friend looked up
and saw this scene and said, Missionary kid...I say
"Bring it!"

Cambria loved the music and would
bounce up and down to the tune.
Dev was in all my skits and she did such a
great job.  She also helped me before we
performed them, as I was selecting them
and needing to hear them out loud.
We make a great team!
Here her and her dad are on their way to
meet Jesus.

Dev was so excited to be in the skits and she just did
such a great job.

The disciples are arguing over who is number one.

I love the role of narration.
"no children"
"Yes children", says Jesus.
"Ring around the rosy" with Jesus.
I so enjoy doing the skits.  There is prep work involved,
I used on line skits and Jesus StoryBook Bible.  We practice
each day at the end of camp and then once more in the morning,
so there is not a lot of extra work.  There is not a lot of
acting coaching...mostly just delivering the lines and not
having your back to the audience and showing emotion.
I once again realize the power of skits.  As I told Dev, I was ready
to take it on the road.

The stories we had to work with were great,
The woman at the well, Zacchaeus, Nicodemus, the blind man,
and letting the children come to Jesus.
The theme was submerge...Jesus sees the person, the inside-- Jesus sees,
Jesus saves, and Jesus knows!

We had the best actor for Jesus (in my opinion).
Gentle and kind...and not white.  :).  He and his family
are our friends and I am so grateful he said yes!
For some of these kids, Jesus came to be more real
seeing a real person in front of them.

The actors were great about this last minute entry of acting out
the song, "Come to Jesus."  It fit so well with the theme of
our skits during the week.  I had done this song in a previous
VBS in California.  They all said yes and it was a big hit!

Love this little camper, she was in my group
last year.  I love their whole family.
Cambria, you made cam possible for me!
Thank you for being so flexible, enjoyable, and easy going!
Bracelets were made on the last day during craft time,
Bobo made Cambria the one she is wearing.

I think the camp will definitely be a highlight
for our summer.  It is just so positive, happy,
organized, and full of life.  It is Jesus!
I was amazed at all the volunteers and just
their willingness to dive in!  It is also great
to be a part of the church and get to know
people more.
